Full-service benefits for San Diego employers.
San Diego's distinct employer landscape.
San Diego is one of California's most specialized employer markets. Life sciences and biotech form the backbone of the San Diego economy — Biocom CA member companies alone employ tens of thousands, and the corridor from Torrey Pines through Sorrento Valley through Carlsbad is one of the top three life sciences clusters in the US. Defense contracting (General Atomics, NASSCO, Leidos, Cubic, Northrop's local operations) creates a second major employment tier with specific benefits norms. Hospitality, tourism, and food service are year-round given San Diego's climate, bringing variable-hour complexity. The cross-border relationship with Tijuana also creates a meaningful segment of employees who commute across the border — a workforce with distinct benefits communication and eligibility tracking needs.
San Diego carriers you won't find in LA or the Bay Area.
San Diego has something the rest of California doesn't: Sharp Health Plan and Scripps Health Plan. Both are local, hospital-system-sponsored HMOs with strong network coverage in San Diego County that simply aren't available to employer groups based outside the region. For SD employers with workforces concentrated in San Diego County, these plans frequently offer better local network coverage and cost performance than the statewide Anthem/Blue Shield/ Health Net options that a national or LA-based broker would default to. Knowing which carriers actually serve your workforce well — at your headcount — is local knowledge that matters.
What San Diego employers ask us most often.
- What's the minimum wage in San Diego I need to be paying in 2026?
- San Diego City minimum wage is $17.25/hr effective January 1, 2026 — above California's statewide $16.90/hr. If your worksites are in unincorporated San Diego County rather than city limits, the state rate applies. This affects ACA affordability calculations if you use the Rate-of-Pay safe harbor — we factor this into your renewal analysis.
- We're a life sciences company in Sorrento Valley. What benefits benchmarks should we be hitting?
- San Diego life sciences companies compete for talent against biotech and pharma employers who set a high floor: full employer-paid medical for the employee and often subsidized family coverage, dental and vision, a 401(k) with match, HSA availability, and long-term disability. At 25–75 employees, you won't match large pharma on total comp, but the benefits package needs to be within range. We can benchmark your current program against what SD biotech employers your size are offering.
- We have employees who live in Tijuana and commute across the border. Any special benefits considerations?
- This is more common in San Diego than brokers from outside the region realize. The main issues are: (1) most HMO and EPO plans don't provide out-of-network coverage for care received in Mexico, which means these employees effectively have emergency-only US coverage; (2) ACA affordability is still calculated on US wages even for cross-border commuters; and (3) enrollment communications often need to be in Spanish. We help clients select plan designs that actually work for their full workforce — not just employees who live in San Diego County.
